Although the true Martingale system is not totally feasible with regards to the game Blackjack, it is still the very basis of most Betting Systems. The Martingale is a very good, and simple, idea…it just does not work in casinos thanks to restricting table limits, and players’ limited bankrolls. The idea is, after a loss, to double your previous bet. When you win, you will be guaranteed to win your previous bet back.

What we can see, each time we win, we make money. At first glance, it might not seem too bad of an idea. The casino has to beat me 7 times in a row, before I lose my $64. I can keep going to $128, $256, $512 and so on. There are, however, a lot of problems. Obviously, we will soon reach the casino’s table limits. Another obvious problem is it takes a lot of money, which isn’t realistic or practical for the average Joe. On top of all this, we have to worry about double downs, that we may lose, and hands that we split. In one hand, the system can cause major losses, skyrocketing our bets very quickly. Of course we could hit Blackjacks, which pay us 1.5 to 1 as a bonus.

The big problem is we are betting a lot for a little. We might play an entire night in the casino and not lose 10 hands in a row. Each time we win we are winning only $1 in our example. This isn’t practical or realistic, as most casinos make you start with at least $3. So we win a little bit over and over, until we do hit the bad streak. All of a sudden we lose everything we won, in a matter of a few hands.

So it is a given that this is bad; very bad. It is nothing you ever want to try at the Blackjack tables, but it does have merit as far as systems go. The Martingale is actually doing what systems want to do. Any system is designed to get back all or most of your losses at some point. Many people do not believe in systems for the obvious reason that the casino has the mathematical advantage over the player, which can never be overcome. Most systems fail because the wagers get too high, and players cannot continue the system, running out of money before it could have actually helped them win. Many others systems just plain don’t work.

The Martingale, however, is useful in its principle. Which system, or betting strategy can work, and make the player a winner? First off, it is important that, in any system, you know how to play correctly. Every hand has one mathematically correct way to play it, and every other option means you are playing mathematically incorrectly. You will never win if you are not playing every single hand right. That is a cold, hard fact.
