When Winning Matters Most

Some people can never grasp the fact that there is losing and losing more.  It is like paying two different prices for the same product.  Who in their right mind would pay $250  for the same product they can buy elsewhere for $50?  Or, even worst, at the same store?

It seems funny now, but many Blackjack players do it all the time.  They play the same hand wrong over and over just because, as I have heard them say "It is a losing hand no matter how you play it anyhow."  Yes, it is a losing hand, but wouldn't you like to lose less by playing it right?

There are times you do weird things in this game in the name of making money.  I can show you right here there are times you should Hit a Hard 12 vs. the Dealers 5.  Now who in their right minds would ever do that?  Well, someone who has the Playing 21 Program and enjoys winning, that is who.

Here is another example of a huge hand played wrong all the time.  We set up a simple test, playing 500 million rounds.  We set up the House Rules, Number of Decks Used and Penetration Points as well as Card Counted.  You of course will set up all those to match the Blackjack table you play at, as well as your own card counting method.

In our example for the Hard 13 vs. the Dealers 2, we decided Player #1 would Stand on this hand and Player #7 would Hit it and but both players would count the same as follows:

After playing the 500 million rounds we went into the Reports and more specifically the Hand Breakdown vs. Dealers Up Card and a few mouse clicks later we're looking at the information below.  Of course we have cut and pasted these screen shots for you.  You can print them or just look at the screen and compare the following information.  Regardless, some interesting information was learned.

Above we can start to see some important findings for this test.  In the Totals column we can see that after 500 million rounds played Standing by Player #1 is the most correct over-all play.  Player #1 lost $450,630 less.  That is a huge amount of money in the over-all Win/Loss Report, and anyone who already understands the Win/Loss Report is licking their chops, for they know they already can beat the casino without the above information. 

If you expand the Hand Breakdown vs. Dealer Up Card above for each player you see some interesting information.  Of course this is a cut and paste, and if you had the Playing 21 Program, you could scroll up to all 45 categories and sided to side for all 21 counts for each and every player, for any Hand vs. any Dealers Up Card.  One thing you can see above is that Player #1 had this hand 3,214,664 times, only 802 times more than Player #7 (3,213,862).  Per Occurrence however, Player #1 only lost $2.94 per $10 bet while Player #7 lost $3.08.  (If Player #7 had this hand the same number of times, or 802 times more, they would have lost 802 x $3.08 = $2470 more still)

 

No Other Way To Play This hand!!!

If you are not Card Counting, and you used the same House Rules and Number of Decks as we did, clearly Standing is the play for the Hard 13 vs. the Dealer's 2.  Is it always the correct play when not card counting.  If you play with different rules or count differently, just run a test and find out what is the correct play for the Blackjack table you play at.

However, if you card counted like we did, you can already see some serious Hand Variation at the Minus Counts.  At a Minus Ten (-10) count Hitting was by far and away the best play.  In fact, by Standing at this one count, as seen above, Player #1 lost an extra $140,680.  That means that if Player #1 would have Stood on every count, and Hit the Minus 10 count, Player #1 would have added to playing this hand correct by $140,680 more dollars than the $450,630 they already were playing the hand more correctly by Standing all the time.

It appears around the count of Minus Three (-3) Standing becomes a better play.  This number is close enough above we might like to test it again in another test, but very likely at the count of Minus 3 we will Stand on the Hard 13 vs. a 2.  It should be stressed again, this is for the counting method stated above.  Each and every different counting method might change this to a different count.

As we can see that the more Face cards remaining in the shoe, the more this is turning into a very favorable hand by Standing.  Just at the count of Plus 10 this is over a $200,000 swing by playing this hand correctly and Standing.

What does the big picture to all this mean?  Well, we wanted to show you it in a chart.  This shows how each player did, and a third column to show how you would have done if you had played the hand correctly at each count.
